Student Member (SMIE) – New grade for Undergraduate B.Tech students

The Council at its 689th meeting held at Ahmedabad approved a new grade of membership – Student Membership (SMIE) - meant for undergraduate students pursuing BE/B.Tech (AICTE approved) or equivalent qualification, completion of which will make them eligible for Corporate Membership. Necessary modifications have already been incorporated in the Bye-Laws. As decided by the Council, the salient points regarding this new membership grade are given below:

Benefits of Student Member

• Technical training by providing opportunity to participate in technical events e.g. Seminars, Symposia, Conventions, Workshops etc. organized by various IEI Centres at State, National and International levels at a concessional rate of 50% of the fees charged from other undergraduate students.
• Student Members (SMIE) may access the IEI Library (Sir R N Mookerjee Engineering Information Service Centre) at the headquarters as well as State and Local Centres of IEI.
• Opportunity for Networking with Engineering Professionals.
• Student Members are entitled to receive the monthly tabloid 'IEI NEWS' and monthly e-newsletter, ‘IEI EPITOME’.
• Financial aid of Rs.50,000/- in R&D projects to groups of SMIE.
• IEI has forged partnership with the globally renowned journal publishing house: SPRINGER. Student Members are entitled to enjoy following benefits regarding IEI journals:-
  i) Make free e-access by logging in through .
  ii) Can avail the journal hard copies at a concessional rate.
• Avail IEI guest houses spread over all important locations in India during all India examinations, job interview or joining of organizations.
• Avail information of job opportunities through login in IEI website.
• Avail merchandise items.
• i) The SMIEs may be upgraded to AMIE within one year of Graduation by paying a balance amount of (Fee for AMIE-Fee for SMIE). Therefore, considering the present fee structure, the fee for upgradation of SMIE to AMIE will be Rs.5000- Rs.1271= Rs.3729/- (+GST).
  ii) A discount of additional 10% may be given to such Members if they were students of IMs.
